Marriage or Family Residency

You can apply for residency if you are married to a Costa Rican, a foreigner with legal residency, if you have kids within Costa Rican territory. The parents of a legal resident can also apply for residency or any sons/daughter that are handicap or under 25.

Same sex couples can also enjoy the same benefits as there is no discrimination under the laws of Costa Rica.

  • The main benefit is the possibility to become a Costarican citizen after living in the country for 2 years, after being married.

    In the case of being the parent of a costarican the time will depends of the nationality of origin, ranging 5-7 years.

  • Naturally, the marriage certificate or birth certificate that proofs the relation.

    In the case of marriage, it is also required to provide a scrap book to show the authenticity of the relationship.

    It is also recommended to provide a certificate of income with a certified Costa Rican accountant.

  • In addition to the main document, it should be included the following:

    • Birth certificate with apostille.

    • Criminal records with apostille (Federal records for the USA and Canada)

    • Registration before Costarican police

    • Selfie

    • Power of attorney

    • Informed consent

    • Payment of the application fees (USD$250 plus transfers)

    Any document that is not in spanish must be translated with an official translator

    • Temporary residency under the Pensionado Category is valid for two years.

    • It can be renewed for additional two-year periods.

    • After three years of holding temporary residency, you will become eligible for permanent residency.

  • The application process for temporary residency usually takes anytime between 6 and 15 months, depending on the processing time of the Dirección General de Migración y Extranjeria (DGME), which takes approximately 9 months to analyze the application.

    This times can vary depending if we apply online, instead of the traditional application.
